Remediation

Binpal Engineering team members and associates have expertise in a broad range of remedial strategies and technologies that may be applicable, depending on the characteristics and concentrations pertaining to the pollutants of concern. We evaluate and determine the most appropriate remedial technique based on site-specific objectives, client needs and our experience. We recognize that client business factors affect the selection of a clean-up or risk management approach and are no less important than engineering factors.

Once the appropriate remediation guideline parameters are established and the soil, vapour and groundwater contamination has been delineated, the most appropriate treatment technique and/or disposal options are selected. Risk analysis can be done to optimize the remediation plan.

Some remediation techniques that can be explored and considered following a cost-benefit evaluation include:

  • Excavation and Disposal
  • Landfarming Techniques
  • Soil Vapour Mitigation Systems
  • Groundwater Pump and Treat Systems
  • Vacuum Extraction Systems
  • Aquifer Air Sparging Systems
  • In-situ Remediation Methods
  • Groundwater Recirculation
  • Biopiles and Bioreactors
  • Fixation and Encapsulation
  • Thermal Desorption and Incineration
  • Risk Assessment

Risk Management

Our risk assessment and management are performed by a professional team including contaminant hydrogeologists, geoscientists, engineers, toxicologists and biologists. These types of projects are frequently goal driven to manage the contaminants in place and to enable the business operations to continue without interruption. The potential effects of contaminants in the environment are calculated to determine if the contaminants may present a human health risk or pose a threat to the environment. This type of approach to risk management of contaminants at commercial and industrial sites is best suited where the cost to clean-up far exceeds the value of land and where land use change, rezoning or divesting is being considered.

Some of the common risk management services provided are:

  • Plant or Facility Closures and Decommissioning
  • Plant Idling and Mothballing
  • Minimizing/Eliminating Operating and Maintenance (O&M) Costs
  • External Expert Guidance
  • Baseline Information Gathering
  • Identify ESA Triggers
  • Underground Storage Tank (UST) Decommissioning
  • Identify Applicable Regulatory Framework
  • Environmental Management Systems
  • Compliance Auditing
  • Environmental Data Management
  • Human and Ecological Risk Assessment
  • Environmental Impairment Liability – Insurance Loss
  • Spill Response Investigation and Impact
  • Mitigation of Environmental Risk
  • Minimizing Potential Legal Liabilities
  • Litigation Support
